A certificação BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) tem novos parâmetros de análise que se juntam, assim, aos vários indicadores que são analisados através desta ferramenta de certificação dos projectos: Circularidade, Bem-estar e Pegada Carbónica.
Para além dos nove pontos chave (Energia; Saúde e Bem-estar; Inovação; Uso do Solo; Materiais; Gestão; Poluição; Transporte; Resíduos; Água), que são o grande enfoque desta certificação desenvolvida pela BRE (Building Research Establishment), juntam-se agora os três novos indicadores, cujo objectivo é enriquecer e aumentar o espectro de análise e de abrangência desta ferramenta. Em termos de Circularidade, o indicador pretende relacionar o uso dos recursos no projecto, através de um design e construção eficientes, assim como a sua durabilidade e manutenção; já o indicador Bem-estar analisa o impacto do edifício nos seus ocupantes; quanto ao indicador Pegada Carbónica, este refere-se a todo o ciclo de vida e debruça-se sobre as emissões de carbono que resultam da concepção, construção, operação e manutenção do projecto.
Recorde-se que a certificação BREEAM surgiu nos anos 90 para ser aplicada no Reino Unido. Ao longo do tempo, foi sofrendo diversas melhorias e, actualmente, é utilizada em vários países europeus, como Alemanha, Holanda, Suécia, Espanha, entre outros. O BREEAM é actualmente um selo com reconhecimento internacional e que engloba todas as áreas do projeto, desde a conceção, passando pela execução e pela exploração do edifício. A certificação BREEAM foi o primeiro esquema de certificação ambiental para edifícios, cujo objectivo passa por atenuar as consequências dos edifícios nos ambientes locais e globais, promovendo o bem-estar nos espaços interiores.
