Michael Bloomberg, milionário norte-americano e antigo mayor de Nova Iorque, anunciou um investimento de 500 milhões de dólares para combater as alterações climáticas, a dependência de combustíveis fósseis e o aquecimento global. Beyond Carbon é o nome desta iniciativa, que pretende, essencialmente, ser uma forma de lobby nos governos locais para a transição para a energia renovável.
De acordo com um comunicado divulgado pelo magnata norte-americano, parte do dinheiro terá como destino a promoção do encerramento, até 2030, de cerca de 250 centrais de carvão nos Estados Unidos e “parar a corrida pela construção de novas centrais a gás”. Outra fracção do dinheiro disponibilizado servirá, igualmente, para financiar as campanhas eleitorais de candidatos “verdes”.
Em declarações ao The New York Times, Bloomberg afirmou: “Estamos numa corrida contra o tempo com o aquecimento global. E não há praticamente qualquer esperança de uma decisão federal forte relativamente ao tema nos próximos dois anos. A mãe natureza não espera pelo nosso calendário político. E nós também não podemos esperar”.
Esta é mais uma iniciativa de Bloomberg para combater as alterações climáticas. Em 2011, o fundador da agência de notícias Bloomberg lançou um programa semelhante, intitulado Beyond Coal, e no mesmo valor, conseguindo, na altura, ajudar a encerrar 289 centrais de carvão nos Estados Unidos.
Na última década, os norte-americanos têm vindo a desistir da utilização de centrais de energia produzida através de carvão. Desde 2010, já foram encerradas 270 centrais do género, que são, ao mesmo tempo, as mais utilizadas e as mais poluentes, a nível de combustíveis fósseis, em todo o mundo. A chegada de Donald Trump à Casa Branca fez temer um desaceleramento desta tendência, já que o presidente norte-americano é um apoiante da indústria do carvão e muitos dos seus discursos incluem a promessa de recuperação do número de empregos neste sector. Todavia, os números dizem o contrário: de acordo com números da agência Reuters e da U.S. Energy Information Administration, entre 2017-2018, mais de 23 400 MW provenientes das centrais a carvão foram desconectados, face a 14 900 MW entre 2009-2012.
